Notes for press and exhibition texts:
A wide range of St Helens Borough groups have been invited to rearrange the letters from the Sutton Manor Colliery Gates into a new 'motto' that reflects the transformations occuring across the borough. Artists Alan Dunn and Jeff Young have worked with Sutton Manor residents who themselves have travelled the borough developing mottos with groups. All mottos will be displayed on over 30 billboards next April with one MOTTO being chosen to become a permanent feature and an accompanying publication given away to every St Helens household. Bios: Artists Alan Dunn & Jeff Young have collaborated on a series of innovative artworks since 2002 that have explored places - both real and imaginary - such as a 1,470 storey high tower block in Liverpool in the year 2040, the bandstand at Arnold Circus in London, the two metal chairs on Liverpool's London Road, the cultural legacy of Bold Street, the Mersey Tunnels and the glass house in Woolton. Jeff Young has written extensively for national TV and radio and has recently developed a stage version of Quadrophenia with Pete Townshend. Alan Dunn developed the 'tenantspin' community Internet TV project across Merseyside that connected isolated community members with Mike McCartney, Margi Clarke, David Puttnam, Roger Phillips, Jayne Casey, Will Self, Wayne Hemingway and Dean Sullivan to discuss social issues such as social housing, money, health, culture and sport. |
