Two years after installation, 1997, and RAY + JULIE remain in place; a little worse for wear and with the original graffiti having been immaculately removed by someone. Up in Carlisle as part of another public art project, two little figures appeared on two chairs, hidden by a fake burglar alarm. Elsewhere in 1997, the 'RAY + JULIE LOOK OUT!!' exhibition appears in the catalogue for LIVE/LIFE at Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville in Paris.
Four years after installation, 1999, and RAY + JULIE remain in place. A Liverpool-based student manages to trace the artists at a new address. RAY + JULIE are forming the centre piece of their Final Project and they wanted to know more about the characters. First thing they did upon hearing the story was go out early one morning and re-spray RAY + JULIE.
The student also creates a detailed scale version of the site and with a clay RAY and a clay JULIE enhanced by back-projections and soundtrack.
Also in 1999, the artists received some out-of-the-blue correspondence from The Liverpool Architecture and Design Trust who had taken over ownership and maintenance responsibility for RAY + JULIE in 1998. The LADT had been carrying out a series of site checks and had undertaken cleaning the concrete and re-coating the chairs (black). To appreciate and support LADT's full range of work, please visit their site at www.ladt.org.uk
Six years after installation, 2001, and RAY + JULIE remain in place. Black and rust-free, but with the re-sprayed RAY + JULIE gone. The artists return to Liverpool after 18 months away and are tracked down by the LADT's Poet In Residence, Andrew Taylor, who had penned 'London Road'. Arranging a meeting, the artists find a wealth of reports and files on RAY + JULIE - maintenance schedules, status reports and technical references.
