Insert Having spent nearly four months on 9RPM parts 1 and 2 (cantaudio 017 and 018 respectively), they were still not finished. The New Year was ticking and one restless morning, at around 4am, I realised that I could preface 9RPM with a work produced in only two days based on snatching snippets from current playlists. I didn’t have time to listen to whole songs, just snatching listens on the bus or at work, grabbing ear worms that would accompany me through the days. And the cutting room floor was filled with such snippets; there was a lot of hardcore (Charles Bronson) and OI, a lot of rare Kraftwerk with a view to a future merger with Metal Machine Music and Rangers vs Celtic, again with a view to a future merger, a confusing of religious sentiments. Dorsey Burnette was stumbled upon while working on the ‘deleter’ 12” dub plates - perhaps his “when you walk alone” will one day merge with the similarly paced “you’ll never walk alone”. GBV - it was strangely satisfying while working on 9RPM to stumble across the Robert Pollard single CD amidst the Xmas frenzy of reduced music in Virgin. He had brought his DIY vision all the way from Dayton to right in front of my nose in Liverpool. Sneaky genius (despite Strong Lion not being his best…). There is People Get Ready, stored for a possible follow up to LEAVES; there are songs from a childhood (Lord of the dance, The Sash) for a quasi-Alan Bennett audio compilation using an image of an attic hatch for the cover. |
| There is the strange Ligeti for an audio work with a cover image of the piano being delivered to our house. And there is Jason Forrest, bought after hearing his ’36 favourite punk songs’ in Probe and it is perhaps that track that more than any other has inspired resolusshhhhhhhh. And a nod to BJ for her show title Ptssschuuuuu!!! at The Waygood Gallery, Newcastle, 2002. And there are only men in resolusshhhhhhhh. And there should be a day with NO MUSIC as Bill said. And there was another restless night when Laurel & Hardy appeared as the cover. Stark, stylised and saying ssssshhhhhhhhhhhh. | |
