The sounds of an art school NAISA (New Adventures In Sound Art), Toronto, Sunday 10 May 2015


A collection of recordings made by visual art students from Leeds Beckett University over the past six years working with Alan Dunn and the sound recordist Chris Watson. Each year a group of students work with Chris around Leeds, building their own contact microphones, experimenting with hydrophones or working with bat detectors to create unique new audio portraits of Leeds at various times of the day.

Part 1, Milkshake to mouthpiece (MP3, 52.8mb, 55 minutes), originally broadcast on Framework in June 2014.
In this selection we hear numerous original recordings and edited compositions ranging from Leeds market, street musicians, metal railings, below the surface of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal and looming Yorkshire storms. Students in this selection include Alan Connolly, Annabel Crossley, David Scarf, Joe Finister and Triin Niinemets.


Part 2, Markets to maggots (MP3, 66.1mb, 55 minutes) , originally broadcast on Framework in June 2012.
In this selection we hear numerous original recordings and edited compositions ranging from the sound of inside a pinball machine, night-time acoustics under the rail bridge by the Leeds & Liverpool Canal and the microscopic sounds of maggots. Students in this selection include Nicky Hamer, Sean Fahey, Lucy Aaronson, Emily Simpson, Verity Hatfield, Manni Cowlin-Zala, Alexander Hall, Abigail Durham, Dania Kooner, Bijan Moosavi, Huw Andrews, Chris Leete, Rob Blackburn, Amy Leech, Sam Elliott, Elisa Grasso and Chloe Plumb.


Part 3, Station to Storm (mp3, 57.7mb, 60'00"), originally broadcast on the now defunct Basic.fm from Newcastle, in January 2014. Station to storm was a one-hour mix from all the Chris Watson master classes.
