Yes, this is the No Parlez project, a cover version of Rutherford Chang’s We Buy White Albums project. My current count is on the main website page. Since I started in 2014, there have been a few presentations about the project (the biggest gasp was at University of Liverpool when I ripped up a No Parlez sleeve in front of Institute of Popular music students and staff), some zine articles, the exhibition in London, a few talks, the not-covers compilation and during, Covid, the ZERO PLAN zine started (yes, it’s an anagram of NO PARLEZ). ZERO PLAN Issues 1-12 explored the LP track by track and Issue 13 came with the AN LP ZERO compilation of not-covers that invited artists, students and musicians to develop new pieces that riffed off something in one of the originals. This new Issue 14 commemorates getting near 300 copies and is a tribute to the many small independent record shops and spotters around the country who have helped me. The issue goes into a little more detail about what the project isn’t about, lists some other great (and hypothetical) cover versions and cites Susan Sontag in considering the regular traits of ‘the collector'. There are only 30 copies available but not for sale as such, so please get in touch by email about swapping one for something (maybe even a No Parlez or two?) Issue 14, 24-pages full colour, 25x17cm, again beautifully printed by our friends at NewspaperClub in Glasgow, also comes with stickers, origami zig-zag-slinky, detourned AIRMAIL label, a free fridge magnet and nod to a forthcoming feature with/in FATCANFLUB. |
